Summer Scholarships

What are Summer Scholarships?

Summer scholarships have deadlines in June, July, and August. Students who are rising high school seniors and current college students should research and apply for scholarships throughout the summer.

With the rising cost of college tuition and growing inflation, students should look for various ways to finance college, including scholarships, internships, and student loans, if they can afford to repay them.

Summer Scholarships -3 Reasons to Apply

Here are three reasons why students should apply for summer scholarships:

  1. Financial Support: Summer Scholarships provide valuable financial assistance to students, helping to cover the costs of tuition, books, and living expenses. By securing a summer scholarship, students can alleviate the burden of financial stress and focus more on their studies and personal growth. For example, Lucy Wilbert-Currie’s daughter, Ayana, won a $12,000 renewable Scholarship from Edward Jones. This is one of many scholarships on The Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis’s website.
  2. Expanded Opportunities: Summer Scholarships often come with additional benefits beyond financial aid. Some scholarships provide access to mentorship programs, networking events, or internships, offering students opportunities to gain valuable industry experience and make essential connections in their field of interest.
  3. Academic and Personal Growth: Summer scholarships often require students to engage in specific projects or research. This involvement can foster intellectual curiosity, critical thinking skills, and personal development. By undertaking these projects, students can deepen their knowledge in their chosen field, gain practical skills, and enhance their academic profile. For instance, Kathy Thigpen’s son, Kalen, is in Greenland as part of a joint scientific expedition with the National Science Foundation. He also received a $1,500 stipend for the fall semester.

Summer Scholarships – 2 Reasons to Compete

  1. Competitive Advantage: Summer scholarships are highly competitive, and being awarded demonstrates academic excellence, dedication, and commitment to one’s chosen field. A scholarship on your resume can distinguish you from other applicants and enhance your chances of success in future academic pursuits or career opportunities.
  2. Recognition and Prestige: Receiving a summer scholarship is an accomplishment that brings recognition and prestige to a student’s academic career. It showcases their hard work, dedication, and achievements, which can positively impact their reputation among peers, faculty, and potential employers.
